ARTIST
WORKSHOPS
Our Artist Workshops are designed to inform and inspire both aspiring and professional artists with focused, hands-on practice in the beautiful 110 year-old barn. These small groups become supportive communities that share conversation and progress long after the workshop is done. Prices and seating availability will be based on the individual workshops. Invites will be clear about the skill level needed for each event.

2024 WORKSHOPS
INTRO TO SPOKEN WORD
WITH KYLE TRAN MYHRE
SATURDAY JUNE 22, 2024
Pay-What-You-Can ($40, $55, $70)
10:00AM – 3:30PM
Across the globe, the spoken word movement has reignited poetry as a force for artistic expression, critical dialogue, and community-building. As both a form (writing poetry that is meant to be shared aloud) and a deeper cultural practice (tracing its roots back millennia), spoken word creates space for all of us to tell our stories, make our values concrete, and speak up about the issues and ideas that matter to us. In this interactive workshop, Kyle will guide participants through the history and fundamentals of the practice, share some of his favorite writing tools, and facilitate space for some writing, some conversation, and some fun. For those that wish to participate, an open mic will conclude the afternoon.
Kyle Tran Myhre (aka Guante) is a poet and activist whose work explores the relationships between narrative, power, and resistance. He has performed at the United Nations, been featured on a Grammy-winning album, been a member of two National Poetry Slam championship teams, and visited countless colleges, conferences, and festivals, using spoken word and storytelling as doorways into critical dialogue. His most recent book, "Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough," is available now via Button Poetry.
DRUM MAKING
WITH WAYNE MANTHEY
SATURDAY AUGUST 24, 2024
13" DRUM = $130 / 16" DRUM = $155
10:00AM – 4:00PM
The healing properties of a drum are found in the elements that make it: wood and animal hide. Making personal frame drums is a journey that is individually and spiritually meaningful. In addition to building your own drum, this workshop involves storytelling and introspection. The drum symbolizes the heartbeat of life and the heartbeat of the community. It is not simply an art form, but a tool for cleansing, centering and focusing one’s intentions for health and happiness.
Wayne will provide all the supplies. Participants will start with a pre-constructed frame, deer hides, and a bucket of walnut stain. After you choose your frame and hides, Wayne will take you through the rest of the drum making process step by step. Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.
Wayne Manthey is a craftsman and teacher of making handmade drums based in Minneapolis. Intrigued by the thought that sound could be created with animal skins, Wayne has been making drums from a variety of hide types for more than 30 years.
KINTSUGI: THE ART OF MENDING
WITH TIFFANY THOMPSON
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2024
$75
10:00AM – 3:30PM
In today's culture, broken things are usually discarded. Faced with a cracked plate, our natural tendency is to move forward and reach for something new. However, the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi offers us a different approach. Kintsugi became commonplace in late 15th Century Japan as a way for families to mend broken teaware. Kintsugi embraces imperfection and brokenness as a way to a more beautiful creation. By filing cracks with gold, Kintsugi turns broken objects into stunning reminders of beauty and strength across generations. In this Workshop, participants will learn a contemporary approach to the traditional art of Kintsugi.
TIFFANY THOMPSON is an award-winning songwriter, singer, speaker and community leader. She designs and leads signature offerings, such as Kintsugi workshops, that prepare people for breakthrough moments. Her passion for helping people unlock their full creative potential is contagious.
